A Letter from Partners Edward A. Wallace and Mark R. Miller
As we mark our fourth year at Wallace Miller, we find ourselves in unstable and difficult times in Chicago and across the country. The legal system is facing unprecedented challenges as powerful corporations seek to insulate themselves from the consequences of their actions.
In the face of this, the pace and scope of civil lawsuits can feel limited. It can be frustrating to work day by day to make small changes—but we never forget that each of the cases we work on can have an enormous impact on the lives of our clients. Small changes, over time, are the only way that big changes happen.
The team at Wallace Miller is in the legal field because we believe in the power of the law to make things right. We believe that everyone deserves dignity, justice, and a fair shot at life. We believe that powerful people and companies who cause harm to others should not be able to get away without consequence. And we believe in the tremendous strength of people who come forward and say, “This isn’t right. We deserve better.”
Justice on a systemic level starts with justice on an individual level. We’ve seen this in the ways that laws and regulations have changed, slowly but decisively—laws that prevent people from being exposed to asbestos, stop companies from making dangerous products, and hold corporations accountable when they pollute the food supply or make drugs that hurt us instead of helping us.
This year, we’ve recovered significant awards for our clients and secured legal victories that benefit everyone seeking justice in our existing practice areas. We’ve also launched our Asbestos and Survivor Advocacy practices and have already helped countless individuals who suffered from life-changing injuries and sexual abuse to hold the institutions responsible for their harm accountable.
We’re proud to have done the steady work over the past four years that has led to these big changes, and we’re ready to continue this work in the coming year. With the unique perspectives, experience, and insight of everyone on the Wallace Miller team, we’ve built and continue to build a firm that fights not only for our clients, but for a more just system.
