The LDS Sex Abuse “Help Line” and Failure to Report Abuse
If you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“LDS Church”), you likely know of its sex abuse “help line” and its protocols for Protecting Members and Reporting Abuse. LDS leaders call the “help line” when they learn of sexual abuse. Church officials have claimed that they can keep knowledge of child sex abuse confidential even in states where they do not have such a privilege. The Associated Press recently did an expose on how The LDS handled child sexual abuse cases in Arizona and West Virginia.
In spite of the LDS Church’s “help line” and abuse policies, there are still countless victims of abuse. The LDS church is facing a slew of lawsuits claiming institutional failings within the organization that has led to countless instances of sexual abuse being carried out or covered up by senior members of the church. Victims have accused the LDS Church of silencing accusers and protecting sexual predators, who are allowed to continue victimizing children and women of the LDS faith. Often, crimes of sexual abuse are investigated by the LDS Church through their “help line,” not local law enforcement. This gives Bishops and other senior church leadership total control over the “investigation,” leaving many victims to feeling powerless and betrayed.
