Tepezza Hearing Loss Lawsuit

Wallace Miller is investigating reports of serious and sometimes permanent damage to hearing related to the popular vision drug Tepezza. If you or a loved one have taken the drug and experienced adverse effects to your hearing, you may qualify for compensation through a Tepezza hearing loss lawsuit.

What is Tepezza?

Tepezza is an IV (intravenous) medicine linked to reports of deafness, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and other permanent hearing problems.

Tepezza (teprotumumab) is the first medication approved in the United States to treat thyroid eye disease (“TED”). TED is an autoimmune condition. People with Grave’s disease, another autoimmune condition, often develop TED.

First Tepezza Hearing Loss Lawsuit

Johnson Becker and our firm filed the first lawsuit (link to PDF of Weibel complaint) on August 25, 2022 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Mr. Weibel alleges that Tepezza caused permanent hearing loss.

Notably, Plaintiff Weibel alleges that the manufacturer of Tepezza, Horizon Pharmaceuticals, failed to warn, instruct, advise, educate, or otherwise inform Tepezza users, Tepezza prescribers, or United States government regulators about the risk of hearing loss, or the need for medical, audiological monitoring. Further, Plaintiff alleges, that all relevant times, the U.S. label for Tepezza contained no warning of permanent hearing loss.

Tepezza Side Effects: Hearing Loss

In March 2021, The Endocrine Society published a study that found 65% of patients on Tepezza reported hearing problems. The hearing problems from Tepezza appeared to develop after an average of 3.6 infusions, according to the findings.

Stanford University researchers included 26 patients in the study who were treated with at least four infusions of Tepezza. Seventeen (65%) of the patients reported new hearing problems. The most common were hearing loss (23%), ringing in the ears (27%), ear plugging sensation (12%) and autophony, an unusually loud hearing of a person’s own voice (29%). Three patients developed a long-term hearing problem called patulous eustachian tube, a disorder in which the channel that runs between the middle ear and back of the nose and throat stays open. The symptoms improved with time, but they did not go away entirely.

The following is a list of potential hearing related side effects of Tepezza:

  • Hearing loss
  • Deafness
  • Hypoacusis
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Autophony (loud hearing of a person’s own voice)
  • Muffled hearing
  • Ear plugging sensation
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction
